Speak Out Against Domestic Violence

29 Sep

Refuge needs your help. It is a sad and shocking fact that one woman in four experiences domestic violence at some point in her life. Yet one in three local authorities has no specialist domestic violence support whatsoever. Refuge has teamed up with Avon, the company for women, to call for specialist support for every single woman and child who needs it – no matter where they live. But they can’t do this on their own – they need your help. Speak out on behalf of women experiencing domestic violence and add your voice to their petition

Refuge patron Jo Brand says: “I am supporting Refuge and Avon’s Speak Out petition because it is simply shameful that one in three local authorities has no specialist domestic violence services whatsoever. More than 1 million women experience domestic violence every year; up to two women die every week because of this insidious crime – we must not turn a blind eye. Join me and speak out. Please sign the petition today.”

Once you have signed, please encourage others to do the same. They need as many people as possible to join in with a mass tweet and Facebook status change on Thursday (September 30). Visit their Facebook page or follow them on Twitter @RefugeCharity to get involved. You can also buy an empowerment necklace for £3 and wear it as a sign of remembrance for those women who were killed by their husbands or partners (all proceeds go to Refuge, the national charity for women and children suffering from domestic violence, and the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).
